Captured in the early morning in late winter, this black-and-white photograph reveals Mount Whitney—the tallest peak (14,505 feet) in the contiguous United States—bathed in fleeting light. The rugged road in the Alabama Hills in the foreground leads your eye upward to the highlighted granite crown of the Sierra Nevada range, where soft clouds drift overhead. The drama of light and shadow conveys both the enormous scale of Whitney’s granite face, and the Old West feel of the high desert landscape where hundreds of western moves were filmed years ago. This image is part of my continuing exploration of the Sierra Nevada’s timeless beauty, a study in contrasts between earth and sky, light and darkness, silence and grandeur.

I created this moment with a Hasselblad 500cm medium-format camera and Zeiss 80mm Planar lens on Kodak T-Max 100 film to give me the best chance to capture the textures and tones in this landscape. The photograph preserves the timeless interplay of light, shadow, and stone in one of California’s most striking alpine landscapes.
