Volcanic Expression

Once a mighty volcano that soared as high as 24,000 feet when it died 1.2 million years ago, the Sutter Buttes now rise humbly—weathered remnants of ancient fire. In this monochrome rendering, I aimed to capture the quiet dignity of this unique landform, often called the smallest mountain range in the world. Soft morning light reveals the flowing contours of the hills, while a solitary tree stands as witness to millennia of erosion, rebirth, and stillness. This image was captured with my Hasselblad 500cm and Zeiss 80mm Planar lens, and Ilford Delta 100 Professional film.

I am honored that five of my images—Before the Storm on Convict Lake, Sierra Crescendo, Solitude in the Valley, Storm on the Pass, and Volcanic Expression—were chosen for publication September 2025 in Collect Art’s 77th special edition magazine “B&W Photography.” This recognition highlights the power of black-and-white to reveal timeless textures, contrasts, and moods within the Sierra landscapes. The feature also includes my biography and interview, offering readers insight into the creative process behind these works.

Volcanic Expression was selected for the prestigious Visa Feed by Art Limited on July 27, 2025. This curated feature showcases outstanding fine art photography to a global audience of artists and collectors. The image was highlighted for its evocative portrayal of the Sutter Buttes, the world’s smallest mountain range and remnants of an ancient volcano. See the Art Limited feature.
