Winter Whispers in Yosemite

Beneath a blanket of snow and clouds, the Merced River reflects the last colors of the autumn days from Yosemite’s winding Merced River under the Middle Yosemite Fall. I captured this image in Yosemite Valley while on one of my first trips to the park. I was amazed that the Merced was almost without movement, knowing just four months later, it would be difficult to even get close to. I captured this image with a Mamiya 645 medium format camera with an 80mm lens, and with Kodak Porta 400 film. This film choice allowed me to capture the snowy riverbank to the frozen veil of mist draping the granite cliffs above. The leafless trees form delicate calligraphy across the mirrored water, rendering a landscape at peace in its color and cold slumber.
