“Yosemite Falls – Winter Ice” was captured on a subfreezing December morning in the Yosemite Valley. This is one of the most photographed icons in the United States, but I set out to capture this through snow and cold because of the wind-blown icing against the wall and the emerging sun from the southeast. I composed for depth and quiet drama, letting black-and-white emphasize structure, luminous ice, and dramatic contrast prevalent in the Sierras with such rich granite formations.

Made with a Mamiya 645 medium format camera and Zeiss 80mm on Kodak Tri-X 400, the negative holds beautiful detail and a timeless tonal range. This print invites lingering: a meeting of force and stillness where water, rock, and winter’s breath become one. It is just so sensational to be there in front of this once-in-a-lifetime view, some considered to be worthy of placement on the wall.
